Global Career Exploration for PhDs

This program is designed specifically for PhD students pursuing global careers within various disciplines. Participants will explore, identify, and evaluate different roles, the required competencies needed, and the types of projects and tasks involved. Upon completion, participants will have gained intentionality of specific roles, ensuring compatibility between their skills, strengths, and interests. This 8-week course has been adapted from materials of the Professional Development Hub Collections, which were developed with funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the National Science Foundation. The original series was developed at Scripps Research and contributed to the pd|hub Collections (https://www.pdhub.org/) by Ryan Wheeler.

The Global Career Exploration for PhDs digital badge is earned after successful completion of an 8-week in-person course consisting of 5 modules. The modules cover key topics like interests, values, risk-taking, skills, imposter fears, resilience, CliftonStrenghts, self-assessment, goal setting, networking, job search skills, and individual development plans. This course offers a blend of hands-on activities, discussions, readings, assignments, and three recorded presentations.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Create a career plan poster that aligns individual self-assessment results with career interests.

  • Identify at least two career options that complement their self-assessment results.

  • Formulate and categorize a list of insightful informational interview questions and complete a minimum of three professional informational interviews.

  • Articulate and substantiate three career-related SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals.

  • Reflect on own career preparation and formulate plans to identify and develop professional competencies relevant to own career interests.

Assessment:

Participants earning the digital badge must successfully complete all course requirements as well as demonstrate proficiency in course material through a series of 2 recorded presentations. Two five to eight-minute recordings covering career options. Recordings will be evaluated by career coaches. The rubric will cover three levels of proficiency: Below Expectations, Meets Expectations, and Exceeds Expectations.

Attendance: Participants must adhere to attendance requirements and actively engage in online and in-person learning activities, discussions, and practical exercises.

Grade Requirement: Participants must maintain a passing grade in all course requirements as specified by the institution.

  • Participants must achieve the 'Meets Expectations' level or higher in the two recordings

  • Upon meeting the above criteria, participants will be awarded the Global Career Exploration for PhDs digital badge, signifying their achievement in mastering foundational concepts and skills essential for career readiness success in global employment strategies.

Alignments and Standards:
